Getting to San Sebastian by Car

Up until a few years ago the drive to San Sebastián from Puerto Vallarta was difficult to say the least, especially in the rainy season. Thanks to a restructured highway and a new bridge, the drive is now much safer, quicker and more enjoyable. However, even with all of the improvements made, getting there by car must still be done with caution as the road can be very windy at times. Extra caution must be taken if driving up between June and October, as this is the rainy season, and a very small stretch of the road can wash out, leaving rocks and gravel on the road.

The drive up will prove to be breathtaking as you ascend into the lush Sierra Mountains, and into a cooler climate. The drive from Puerto Vallarta is roughly 90 minutes, and although there are a few gas stations along the way, you'd be safer to fill up before you leave.

If you are renting a car, any make or model will do. You will only need something rugged and heavy duty if plan to visit La Bufa ridge - a worthwhile 40 minute trip up a rocky road from San Sebastián.
